About Me

Welcome to Kristen Keeping Up!

I started this little blog in 2009 while working and going to grad school full time while training for a marathon.  I have since graduated, however, continue to work full time and have added training for cycling events and triathlons to my resume.

The funny thing is . . . I always hated running, no actually I despised it.

That's not to say I didn't like being active.  I grew up dancing and swimming and enjoyed working out but I didn't run.

In fall 2006 my best friend in grad school told me about a half marathon training through the local Fleet Feet store.  She promised me we would have a lot of time to train since the "goal" race wasn't even until in May 2007.  I told her she was insane, however, I will try anything once and agreed to join her on this crazy endeavor.  Between the demands of school and work I was actually looking forward to having something else to focus on.

My first day of training I set out to run two miles.  I went to the track since I remembered from high school four laps was one mile.  After one lap I thought I was going to die.  How was I going to run 13.1 miles?  Despite feeling defeated I was not about to give up.  For the next 7 months I ran a few 5ks, 10ks and slowly the miles got easier and easier and on May 20, 2007, I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon!

I promise I was having more fun than it looks!
The high I experienced during that race was indescribable and somewhere between that first quarter of a mile on the track and the finish line I found a new love.

After a half, training for a full marathon seemed like the next logical step.  I have completed three full marathons - San Diego Rock n' Roll in June 2009, the California International Marathon (CIM) in December 2009 and the Big Sur International Marathon in April 2013 and have shaved over an hour off my original time!

In 2008, I casually added cycling and triathlon into the mix.  In 2010, I completed my first century ride.  In 2011, I crossed the finish line of my first half ironman.  In 2012, I rode 545 miles in seven days with AIDS/LifeCycle down the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles.  By the end of 2012 I discovered trail running and in March 2013 I completed my first ultra marathon.

You can find a list of all my races and corresponding recaps here.

I may not be the fastest runner or the best cyclist but with each race I go farther and faster than I ever thought I could.  I have done things I never imagined, pushed limits I never knew I had and reached goals I have never thought possible.  I have taken lessons I have learned and applied them to other aspects of my life.  I have learned perseverance, how to overcome obstacles and that I am stronger than I think I am.   There is nothing better than feeling that of accomplishment and knowing the success of was nothing but my own hard work and determination.

A large part of my blog covers running, cycling and races but behind all that is and average 30-something girly girl.  I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband and our two rescue fur children, Griffey, our hyper, worrywart dachshund/chihuahua mix and Tory, our  dachshund transplant from Mexico.  I am obsessed with coffee, anything with ruffles and bows, the color pink, all things Apple.  I love animals, taking pictures, traveling, reading, mojitos, sushi, Reeses and gummy bears.  I love technology but recognize the most important place to be is out experiencing life so when the blog is quiet it means good things are happening.

I invite you to grab a latte and "keep up" with me. Thanks for stopping by!
